Cloud Migration, Application Modernization and Hybrid Cloud in 2017
If you work in enterprise IT you’ve heard the phrases “cloud migration”, “application modernization” and “hybrid cloud” almost ad nauseum. But these IT trends aren’t just being discussed at industry trade shows anymore—now they are major initiatives for enterprise organizations across the globe.
So what are these initiatives? And what do they mean for you and your organization?
The good news is that these trends are essentially talking about the same thing. Traditional infrastructure and applications are becoming more expensive to maintain and cloud infrastructure is offering affordable speed and scale. Bringing your existing applications to the cloud is called “cloud migration”. Often times your existing applications aren’t able to run in a cloud environment due to dependencies on on-premises infrastructure so the application will need to undergo “modernization” in order to migrate to the cloud. And due to the significant investments enterprises have already made into their data centers, it doesn’t make economic sense to abandon on-premises infrastructure completely. They’ll need to manage on-premises and cloud infrastructure together to provide resources for new and existing applications in an environment called “hybrid cloud”.
The concepts are fairly straightforward but the execution can be tricky as managing multiple infrastructure environments and application architectures introduces new complexity. Modern applications and infrastructure also come with a learning curve and will affect internal processes. In many ways, your people and processes will experience change very similar to the technologies they support.
2017 will prove to be the year where cloud migration, application modernization and hybrid cloud will take center stage. “If” is no longer the question. The IT organizations who pioneered these initiatives are experiencing a significant reduction in infrastructure footprint (+50%) and massive leaps in speed of development (6x in some cases). The real questions IT organizations need to be asking are “how do I strategically approach a migration/modernization initiative?” and “what pitfalls do I need to avoid?”
Exploring the answers to these questions will be a focus here on the Apcera blog in 2017. We also have a webinar on February 2nd with Mark Thiele, an innovative IT executive with deep expertise in cloud and data center trends, and he’ll share insights and strategies for cloud migration, application modernization and hybrid cloud initiatives. Mark is also very active on Twitter, so feel free to tweet questions to him now and we’ll share several of those on the webinar. Join us by registering below:
